Take Rt.#7 out of Salyersville, Kentucky and go thru Royalton. In another 3-4 miles you will see a race track on your right. Turn right there [Half Mountain]. In about 1/2 mile you will cross the Licking
River over a metal arch bridge. After you cross the bridge turn left on Wireman Rd. It will be about 1 1/2 miles down this road on your right.
Please Note: There is a Memorial Marker for Patsy's husband Mark Whitaker

DEAR PATSY
WE GRACIOUSLY PLACE THIS MARKER TO HONOR YOU, A FOUNDING MOTHER OF THIS AREA. SOMEWHERE FARTHER
UP ON THIS SCENIC HILL, AND LOST TO TIME IS YOUR GRAVE.
WE HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE OF YOUR LIFE. YOU WERE BORN BETWEEN 1760 AND 1770 IN TENNESSEE. IT IS LIKELY YOU
MARRIED YOUR BELOVED MARK WHITAKER, A CIRCUIT RIDING METHODIST PREACHER, WHEN HE LOCATED NEAR JONESBORO, TENN IN 1793-1795. IN 1802 YOU AND MARK MOVED YOUR SMALL FAMILY TO
CASTLES WOODS, THE FIRST SETTLEMENT IN WHAT IS NOW RUSSELL CO. VIGINIA. IN 1805 YOU TWO BOUGHT 100 ACRES ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE CLINCH RIVER. MARK ESTABLISHED THE FIRST METHODIST
CHURCH IN 1786 IN CASTLES WOODS AND REMAINED ITS PASTOR UNTIL HIS DEATH.
WE WISH WE HAD KNOWN YOU. THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT YOU WERE A STRONG PIONEER WOMAN. AFTER BURYING MARK IN 1812 YOU LIVED
NEARLY 40 YEARS A WIDOW. YOU RAISED YOUR CHILDREN IN VIRGINIA AND CAME TO THIS BEAUTIFUL WILDERNESS LAND WITH FIVE OF YOU(R) CHILDREN. FAMILY TRADITION SAYS THAT YOU WERE A TEACHER TO THE
EARLY SETTLERS CHILDREN.
BISHOP FRANCIS ASBURY SAID OF MARK, "I WISH HIS WIFE MAY NOT LOVE HIM TO DEATH." WE THINK THIS SAYS MUCH ABOUT YOU.
WE THANK YOU FOR THE LIFE YOU LIVED AND PRAY WE ARE BLESSED, AS WERE YOU.
WITH LOVE, YOUR DESCENDANTS
Cousins, we owe a large debt of gratitude to Bob Whittaker and his lovely wife Betty and their family for all they do to help preserve our history
and the memory and knowledge of our ancestors. Their hard work and dedication is limitless and once again they've come through with flying colors
on this!
Bob and the Magoffin County Historical Society have collected $3001.00 for the $3000.00 marker. Please support the efforts of the
Bob says,
"I think this is fantastic. A little history. When I first broached the MCHS about a Memorial Marker for Patsy, they were a little reluctant. [1] Historically the MCHS had picked up part of the expenses of the Memorial Marker[and their funds were low]. [2] I think the turn out and sales in the previous year had been low. [3] I think they thought the Whitaker turn out would be low. I remember initally the response was very slow. I again assured Todd. I remember telling him 'Todd, the Whitakers tend to be quiet, but when the time comes they are there IF it involves family.'
I am very proud of my Whitaker extended family. We accomplished a great deal. [1] We put up two of the most impressive monuments in the county. [2] We paid for our own Memorial Marker
[3] The turn out was huge and they sold about everything. [4] Their treasury is in good shape. [5] Last but not least, all of the MCHS people were greatly encouraged to continue the good work
they are doing.
My thanks to all for the contributions, help and encouragement."
